Learning Through Play
How great is it when we can get our kids learning their sight words when they don’t even know they are learning?
Forget those flashcards, I am all about turning learning into play and making learning exciting. We all know that exciting equals memorable.
That’s the beauty of engaging kids in a game they know, like Twister, and adding in a few sight words. Nothing like adding fun and learning all together now is there?
Sight Word Twister
Not only did my son love this learning game when he was a little tike but my small reading groups used to beg to play this one too!
Supplies Needed:
- Twister Game
- 24 Index cards
- Marker
- tape
How To Play:
- Choose your sight words and write them on the index cards with your Sharpie.
- Fill each circle with a sight word (ABCs, numbers, shapes, the possibilities are endless).
- Make sure to tape down those sight word cards so they don’t slip and slide all over the Twister mat.
- Play!
There are always tons of giggles, tangled legs and arms, and of course a few falls along the way, but most of all a boat load of learning!
Just a Little FYI About Sight Words
Did you know The Dolch Sight Word List is a list of 220 of the most common sight words plus an additional 95 nouns. Check out my previous post, What Are Sight Words and Why Are They Important? for more information.
